How to Calculate Concrete

Concrete volume is just length × width × thickness, with every measurement in the same unit. Because thickness is usually given in inches, divide it by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying. That gives you cubic feet; divide by 27 to get the cubic yards that ready-mix trucks are billed in. For round columns and Sonotube forms, the volume is π × radius² × height instead.

Bagged concrete is sold by weight, and the yield is roughly 0.30 ft³ per 40 lb bag, 0.45 ft³ per 60 lb bag, and 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag. Always order a little extra — about 10% — to account for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. This calculator adds your chosen waste factor automatically and shows yards, bags, and ready-mix cost at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much concrete do I need?

Multiply length × width × thickness (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. This calculator handles slabs, footings, round columns, and walls — just enter your dimensions and it shows yards, bags, and ready-mix cost instantly.

How many bags of concrete in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. It takes about 90 forty-pound bags, 60 sixty-pound bags, or 45 eighty-pound bags to fill one cubic yard of concrete.

Should I add extra for waste?

Yes. Add about 10% extra to cover spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. This calculator includes an adjustable waste slider, set to 10% by default.

Turn Your Measurements Into a Real Floor Plan

Once you know your dimensions, generate a labeled, to-scale floor plan in seconds — then export it to DXF or build it in 3D. No CAD experience needed.
