How to Calculate Flooring and Tile

First find the floor area — length × width for a rectangular room, or just enter a total if you already have it. Add a waste factor of around 10% so you have enough material for cuts, breakage, and future repairs, then divide by the coverage of one box or tile and round up. Boxes list their square-foot coverage on the carton; a single tile covers its width × height in inches divided by 144 to get square feet.

Diagonal, herringbone, and other patterned layouts create more offcuts, so bump the waste factor up to 15% or more for those installs. Buying a little extra from the same lot also protects you against dye-lot color shifts if you ever need replacements. This calculator handles boxes, loose tiles, the waste factor, and material cost all at once as you type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide your total square footage, including a waste allowance, by the square feet per box printed on the carton, then round up. For example, 220 sq ft of flooring in 20 sq ft boxes needs 11 boxes.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Plan on about 10% extra for straight layouts to cover cuts and breakage. Increase it to 15% or more for diagonal, herringbone, or patterned installations where there are many more cuts.

How do I calculate tile for a floor?

Measure the floor area (length × width), add a waste factor, then divide by the coverage of one tile or box. Tile coverage equals the tile width × height in inches divided by 144 to get square feet per tile.
