How to Estimate Drywall for a Room

Drywall is sold by the sheet, so the goal is to convert your room into total square footage and divide by the sheet size. Wall area is 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height, and if you're hanging the ceiling too, add length × width. Add a waste factorof about 10% for cuts around windows, doors, and outlets, then divide the total by the area of one sheet (a standard 4×8 sheet is 32 square feet) and round up.

For finishing materials, plan on roughly 32 screws per sheet, about 0.053 pounds of joint compound per square foot, and around 0.37 linear feet of tape per square foot. This calculator turns those rules of thumb into buckets and rolls automatically. Material estimates are a starting point — buy a little extra so you're not stopping mid-job for one more sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many drywall sheets do I need?

Calculate the total wall area as 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height, add the ceiling if you're covering it, add about 10% for waste, then divide by your sheet size (a 4×8 sheet is 32 ft²) and round up. This calculator does all of that instantly.

How much joint compound do I need per sheet?

A common estimate is about 0.053 pounds of joint compound per square foot of drywall, which is roughly 1.5–2 pounds per 4×8 sheet for taping and three finish coats. A 4.5-gallon bucket holds about 61.7 pounds.

How many screws per drywall sheet?

Plan on about 32 screws per 4×8 sheet — roughly every 12 inches in the field and 8 inches along edges. A pound of 1-1/4 inch drywall screws contains about 320 screws, so one sheet uses about 0.1 pound.
